What is a Mandala?
Mandala means 'circle' in the Sanskrit language, and mandalas are sketched or painted in a circular frame. Mandala art has been used throughout the world as a creative process for personal and spiritual transformation.
Since it is difficult to see into the unconscious directly, you will need some kind of mirror with which to see the human and spiritual forces that operate within you. Mandala art can provide a mirror to your inner world.
You might normally experience yourself as a fragmented collection of subpersonality parts in your day-to-day life. Mandala art you can support you to see how all of your parts fit together in patterns of wholeness.
Mandalas are drawn in the round, and they can lead you to an experience of wholeness. When you begin to play with images, patterns and symbols, you can move from a cognitive, rational, intellectual frame of reference into an intuitive expanded state of awareness.
An Emotional Approach to Mandalas
In traditional mandalas, there is a central point or focus within a circle and a symmetrical design radiates from the center. This symbolism suggests there is a center within you from which everything is ideally healed, ordered and symmetrical within. Meditating upon symmetrical mandalas can incite feelings of order and wholeness.
To create an emotionally expressive mandala in this course you will draw a circle, fill the circle in spontaneously, letting the drawing, painting or collage emerge step by step in an intuitive way. When your mandala is complete, you will have holistic snapshot of what is emotionally going on within you right now through pattern, colour and symbols.
By drawing, painting and collaging intuitive symbols, you can connect to your own inner world as it is right now.
